Gotta try a little harder

March 4, 2010 - Karin Elton
A Star Tribune story in the March 1 Variety section quotes a parent-child relationship expert as saying “The children of divorced parents are at least 50 percent more likely to get a divorce than those from an unbroken home. When both the husband and wife come from divorced families, the odds of divorce are 200 percent higher.”

When I edit engagement notices to be published in the paper, I sometimes wonder how many will be divorced in a year or so, knowing the divorce rate is 50 percent. Lots of times there are many names listed as parents so those couples should know that they have to fight a little harder — especially if there are children involved — to keep their marriage intact.

The expert said if there are “high conflict” issues in the marriage, domestic violence or a major power imbalance, get out. But if it is something milder, the expert recommends counseling and the simple passage of time and it often gets better.
