What the ACC has to offer

The dust has settled, the holidays are behind us, and we are officially in full swing of the year 2018.

February is the month in which we celebrate love. Love is such a powerful word as it provokes a variety of emotions.

Professionally….my mind shifts to knowing that I have the incredible gift of being blessed with the job at the Adult Community Center that I love. It is a gift to be able to honestly say that I love coming to work every day and here is why I love what I do.

Love is…knowing that you have a home away from home when you come to the Marshall Adult Community Center. Love is knowing that you can continue to live life surrounded by friends that become family.

I wanted to point out a few things that I believe sets Marshall Adult Community Center apart from other senior centers. The Marshall Adult Community Center is a place in which seniors within the community 55 and best are living life beyond the normalcy of what a traditional senior center offers a community. They are willing to push the walls beyond the traditional image of cards and bingo and have started to redefine what a senior center looks like. The driving force behind this change is that individuals as they age are wanting more out of a center. Each individual brings a separate dynamic, request, and individual interest as they enter in and engage in life. Previously, senior centers had been defined by both bingo and cards. At the Marshall Adult Community Center we continue to offer the traditional activities but we also aim to provide activities that go far beyond that!

As people, we all have the need to laugh, live life, to have fun, to explore and to learn, which is a continual process through life.

Here is what we offer at the Marshall Adult Community Center.

Special events: Often events are holiday themed, but no special occasion is needed. The month of January we enjoyed a Flannel and Frost Party in which seniors came dressed in flannel and then we enjoyed a frosty ice-cream social. This month we will be having a Friendship, Fun & Flowers Tea Party at the Lyon County Museum.

Connecting & learning: Learning is a joy and lifelong learning is a key ingredient when it comes to great senior activities within the center. We foster relationships with local, regional and statewide entities to bring opportunities for the seniors in our community to learn. This past month we enjoyed partnering with SMSU to offer college classes at the senior center as well as Myth Busters and Lunch and Learn opportunities. As we head into February we are embarking on a new travel journey in which we will learn about the variety of cultures that reside in the Marshall community.

Arts & crafts: This past year we have enjoyed the arts through painting and have offered classes including canvas painting from ReVamped Art as well as a new trend that has hit the state including barn quilt squares. In addition to this we have enjoyed listening to performances from local musicians.

Leisure & entertainment: Entertainment is a mainstay of the Marshall Adult Community Center. Check out opportunities in our monthly newsletter for details.

Fitness, wellness and recreation: Fitness today involves a lot more than “the morning stretch.” We encourage a healthy lifestyle through offering not only exercise programs (bone builders, stretch ‘n’ flex, coffee club walkers, training for 5K walk/run) as well as classes on how to create healthy lifestyles, live with a progressive disease yet remain an active individual within the community, support groups, and cooking classes. Today at the Marshall Adult Community Center we strive to make fitness fun (and dignified) in order to encourage residents to view exercise as a pleasure rather than a chore.

Day trips, travel and outdoor excursions: We have hosted field trips to museums, sports game, concerts and shows.
