A busy month at SMSU

October is one of the busiest months of the year when it comes to students and the college search process. Hundreds of prospective students and their families take advantage of the various college visit opportunities and events that fill the calendar at SMSU. Students have the chance to come tour the campus, visit with faculty and meet current students who are excited to share their Southwest experiences.

When students visit our campus, they hear about a university that prides itself in preparing students to be successful in their chosen career as engaged citizens wherever those careers lead them. We take great pride in the fact that our current employment rate for students is 99 percent! Our SMSU graduates leave prepared with not only an applied knowledge base, but also a liberal arts foundation that has prepared them to think critically, communicate effectively and solve problems.

The experiences that our students enjoy at SMSU involve a residential learning environment that encourages students to live on campus and become immersed in the many activities we offer. With over 100 clubs, organizations and leadership activities, our students are part of a community that has opportunities for everyone. Whether it is athletics or music, theater or student government, everyone has a chance to explore new opportunities both in and outside the classroom. We pride ourselves in making sure that our students are active and engaged in their learning while at SMSU.

Part of being actively engaged in the learning process requires that students embrace the opportunity to apply what they learn in the classroom. This past month our environmental science students shared the knowledge they have gained with high school and middle school students as part our ongoing water quality-testing project. Our agronomy students worked with faculty and industry experts to begin harvest and analysis of our research plots, and our culinolgy students displayed their knowledge and talents by assisting in preparation of food for the University Gala. All of these experiences prepare our students to be successful once they cross that stage at graduation and embark upon their careers.

Finally, the message that families will hear about is that of making an investment. No doubt, the cost of attending college today may seem daunting, but we pride ourselves in being an exceptional value and one of the most affordable educations available. We have a robust scholarship and financial aid program that can assist most everyone. The value of a college education will more than pay for itself with increased lifetime earnings.

Through the end of the month, SMSU is waiving application fees, so it is a great time for high school seniors to apply for next fall. Visit campus and see what your hometown university has to offer and see for yourself why SMSU is, Where You Belong!
