May is Rotary Youth Service Month

Rotary’s Youth Service programs have a long history of developing young leaders, and providing for health and education projects to make the world a better place. These programs make it a priority to create world peace and understanding while exposing youth to the ideals of “Service Above Self.” Youth Service is important because youth are our future. Youth will be running our country and the world, and are the future of Rotary. For Rotary and its ideals of service as a worthy enterprise to survive and thrive beyond our lifetime, Rotarians must be involved in Youth Service.

Our Rotary clubs in Marshall are serious about providing services for youth that will better their lives locally and around the world. Here are examples of how Rotarians interacted with youth in our community.

Each year sixth-grade students participate in Rotary’s 4 Way Test Essay writing project which introduces students to the core beliefs of Rotarians regarding the importance of living a life that is honorable and recognizes the importance of building healthy relationships. Another valuable project was the purchasing of books for elementary students needing assistance reaching their grade level reading skills. These books are designed to allow ESL students to feel more comfortable with reading materials that encourage them to take on the challenges of learning a new language. Regardless of reading ability, there’s always a need for a dictionary — even though technology has reduced the use of traditional dictionaries, Rotarians believe it’s important that more than 200 third graders receive, and learn to use, a real dictionary.

Advancing literacy around the world happened by supporting Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library project, which has sent more than 85 million age-appropriate books to registered children around the world. Locally, Rotary is partnering with the United Way by maintaining the availability of children’s books in several locations in Marshall through the Little Red Book Shelf project.

Marshall Middle School students also learned the importance of serving others when they packaged over 93,000 Food For Kidz meals that provided nutritious meals for people locally and around the world. This event showcased the positive enthusiastic energy of so many students that are motivated to package meals knowing that their efforts will make a difference in peoples’ lives around the world.

Throughout the school year Marshall HS seniors researched the values of Rotary and presented their findings to Rotarians. Not only are these students learning the important role Rotary plays in creating better lives for people, it also gives Rotarians a sense of accomplishment knowing that throughout students’ educational years Rotary values has been a part of their lives.

Doing our part to better the lives of youth and instilling the values of Rotary in students to do what’s right is a goal of Rotary both locally and around the world. We take pride in our accomplishments and continue to search for opportunities to serve others.
