Creating a strategic plan for MPS

As I work on this document — even though there are only a few days of school left — there is much to share about what’s happening in the Marshall Public School District.

We recently started a process that will lead to the creation of the next strategic plan for the Marshall Public School District. The main reason for having a strategic plan is to have a roadmap so we are able to accomplish or reach our mission and vision — we can have an excellent mission and vision, but it is not likely we will be successful in accomplishing these without a detailed plan. A comprehensive strategic plan will help stakeholders have a common vision for the district, it will identify how and where resources will be best used, and it will provide details about the level of success in the district. All of these will ultimately benefit the students.

Information about what has happened so far in the strategic planning process — including a summary of perceptions about the school district that was received from students, staff, parents, community members, and the school board — can be found on the district’s website (www.marshall.k12.mn.us).

Next steps in the process involve developing a mission and vision for the district and getting agreement on the core values or beliefs that our school district has. Once these have been determined, goals and objectives need to be prioritized and determined, along with indicators and measures of progress on the (identified) goals and objectives. I anticipate a draft Strategic Planning Governance Document will be considered by the Marshall Public Schools’ Board of Education in July. As the strategic planning process continues, we will post updated and relevant materials and documents on the district’s website.

There are three recognitions I would like to briefly mention. First, Marshall Public Schools was recently recognized by the Minnesota Department of Education as a recipient of the 2017 School Finance Award for 2016 Financial Reporting. The criteria for this award includes timely submission of data, compliance with statutes, presence of indicators of fiscal health and accuracy in financial reporting. This award is the result of the quality work district staff do with our school finances. Additionally, Bruce Lamprecht, director of business services, was selected by the Minnesota Association of School Business Officials as the 2017 School Business Official of the Year Award, which is a well-deserved recognition of all of Bruce’s hard work and diligence. The final recognition I would like to mention is the Class of 2017. I’ve had the privilege of getting to know several of this year’s graduates, and this is a very good group of talented young men and women who are destined to do great things after graduation. Congratulations and best wishes to all Marshall High School Class of 2017 graduates!

Thank you for taking time to read this and for your support of the Marshall Public School District.
