A Halloween cocktale

It was a dark and stormy night in the antique and abandoned necropolis. Because of the heavy rains, the usually slow moving Black Devil River was fiercely flowing but it was far enough away from the weather beaten and forgotten tombstones to not be a threat to them.

It was a known fact that Good and Evil walked among the grave markers and, more than once, it was whispered that Black Magic made its appearance on nights when a full moon was shining. There was also talk about those who had Risen From The Dead.

But on this particularly stormy night, a lonesome wisp of a spirit was alone, confused and sad. Black Magic Margarita had been silently waiting since Vespers for her one true love and was becoming concerned that her one true special spirit might have become lost in the Blood and Sand of the rushing waters of the river.

“We agreed to meet right here by the Black Widow,” she plaintively said out loud. “Where is he?”

She had a deathly premonition that something was wrong and to ease her Brain, she began slowly undulating through the dark and silent cemetery in search of him.

As she wisped around a 300-year-old tombstone, she came upon Bloody Mary. Even though the two had known each other for centuries, both were surprised to meet on such a black night. “Have you seen him?” she asked her old fiendish friend.

“No!” Bloody Mary responded. “But there are rumors of Poison Apples being found among the graves. Let’s hope he hasn’t tasted one and ended up with a Bloody Brain.”

Margarita continued her quest and soon spotted the Jack O’ Lantern sitting on a tombstone. Greeting each other with a head nod, she asked the smiling lighted face if he’d seen her special spirit. Being an object of few words, Jack O’ Lantern answered “Nope, but have you tried asking the Zombie?”

Ever since the Zombie had thrown a Toxic Shot at Margarita, she has not wanted anything to do with that creature and she quickly dismissed the thought of seeking advice from it. She quietly thanked Jack O’ Lantern and continued on her search for him.

In the distance and by the oldest grave in the cemetery, she saw the Witch’s Hat and flew her way to be with the witch. Despite the angrily burning fire and the pot of Sweet Poison, she felt comfortable around the bent and bony figure. However, knowing the Witch’s Heart could be Good and Evil, she cautiously approached the fire and began a conversation with the witch.

“I’m looking for him,” she said softly. “Have you seen him? He promised to meet me tonight and I can’t find him.” Sensing the hurt and fear within Margarita, the Witch’s Brew began to bubble with intensity and turmoil. Turning to the lost and afraid spirit, the witch said she would help with her quest and immediately cast a spell upon the skies that blew away the stormy weather.

Suddenly the Milky Way was visible and the full Blood Orange moon cast its shining light on the long forgotten but not unpopulated graveyard. Looking at the Liquified Ghost before her, the witch’s Black Magic allowed her to point her aged and bony finger toward the Black Devil and the river immediately became a gently bubbling little stream. Taking that bony long clawed finger to be her guide, Margarita quietly thanked the witch and quickly floated to the water.

As she arrived at the stream, her teary eyes fell upon a huddled and disheveled figure sitting on the bank of the moving water. Even though he looked like he had just Risen From The Grave, Margarita’s heart was filled with emotion and she hurried to his side.

“It’s you!” she shrieked and put her arms around the love of her life – The Vampire!

As the two ghostly characters sat and enjoyed their Almond Joy together, all was good in the nether world.

For you see, dear reader, perfect pairings of cocktails are found everywhere and, in this tale, a Margarita and a Vampire are perfect together!

May you have a perfectly paired Halloween treat — whatever it is!

Happy Halloween!

Next week, we travel.

As always, eat and drink in moderation but laugh with reckless abandon!

Cheers!
