Numbers from county auditor

To the editor:

I would like to respond to the accusation made by (Marshall Public Schools superintendent) Scott Monson that my letter of Feb. 1 was based on inaccurate information. When I wrote my letter, I obtained the numbers from the county auditor. The school system is not sending me current numbers so that was my only source. I realize that the school district may be paying on their debts monthly, or should be, and that perhaps they do not update the auditor every time they make a payment. My numbers totaling $28,000,000 may not have been updated to the minute, but they were the latest “public” numbers available.

On Feb. 18, Bruce Lamprecht, director of business services, was quoted in an article in the paper with different numbers from mine and Mr. Monson’s numbers of Feb. 24 are different from his.

Mr. Lamprecht’s article and Mr. Monson’s letter to the editor were very shrewdly written to obscure the total amount of indebtedness. Mr. Monson, in your letter to the editor you said, “we owe it to the Marshall community to provide accurate and up-to-date information,” so I want you to give us, the Marshall community, one number for the total indebtedness (including leases) of the Marshall School District effective March 1.

My next point addresses you personally. I find it extremely unprofessional of you and the position you hold that you decided to discredit and attack me personally in your letter; it was the only letter to the editor published on Feb. 1. I believe your condescending attitude toward me is rooted in some ulterior motive; I must have really struck a nerve.

At any rate, the fact is, the people of the Marshall School District know the debt amount still owed is huge and you’re asking us to cough up another (approximate) $39,000,000. The combination of current debt and future debt you want to incure would seem to be over $65,000,000!
