Will drivers get a little reckless?

It will be interesting to find out how raising the speed limits on several highways in southwest Minnesota will affect safety. The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced this week the speed limit will increase from 55 to 60 miles per hour on highways including Highway 59. MnDOT said the increases came about after a speed study mandated by the Minnesota Legislature. Many drivers drive at 60 miles per hour or even faster on a consistent basis. And knowing human nature, motorists may increase their speeds even more.

Walz has Ivanhoe connections

Congratulations to our new governor. As it turns out, Tim Walz actually has connections to southwest Minnesota. His wife, Gwen, grew up in Ivanhoe and her parents still live there. In fact, Walz’s father and mother in-law, Val and Lynn Whipple, joined the victory celebration in St. Paul.

tru Shrimp harbor good news

Tru Shrimp announced it has started the planning process for constructing the shrimp harbor in Luverne. While Marshall was left disappointed that the harbor is not being built in its industrial park, the shrimp operation will benefit southwest Minnesota. If the harbor is successful in Luverne, hopefully it will lead to more harbors in the region.

Terrible news from California

In accordance with a proclamation issued by President Donald Trump, Gov. Mark Dayton directed all United States flags and Minnesota flags to be flown at half-staff at all state and federal buildings in the State of Minnesota. The President’s order follows the terrible act of violence in Thousand Oaks, California, that left 12 people dead. Among the dead was a police officer who was the first law enforcement officer to enter the bar where the shooting took place. Americans salute a hero who sacrificed his life in hopes of saving others.
