Zimmer is the right person for the job

In 2014, then Assistant Lyon County Attorney Tricia Zimmer was quoted in the Marshall Independent encouraging a Southwest Community Drug Court graduate to keep working on his sobriety.

“You really have come a long way,” Zimmer told the man only identified as Jeremy. “You’re on the right track. You need to stay on it.”

The presiding judge for the drug court program was Leland Bush. Four years later, Bush announced his retirement and Gov. Mark Dayton was presented with the task to name Bush’s replacement in Minnesota’s Fifth Judicial District. Dayton announced his decision on Friday to appoint Zimmer to the position. Not only was Dayton’s choice the right decision, it was the only choice.

Others may know the law as well as Zimmer. However, it’s Zimmer’s strong connection to the area covered in the Fifth Judicial District that makes her the right choice.

Zimmer grew up in South Dakota and completed her undergraduate and law degrees at the University of South Dakota. She began her law career as a judicial law clerk in Marshall.

Besides her 13 plus years as assistant county attorney, her resume includes being an adjunct professor at Southwest Minnesota University, judicial law clerk for the Fifth Judicial District, a volunteer of the United Way of Southwest Minnesota, service on the Marshall Police Advisory Board, Minnesota West Community and Technical College Administrative Support Advisory Committee and volunteer of year award from the YMCA. And that is really the tip of the iceberg of her long list of service in southwest Minnesota.

So it’s not surprising that somebody who has made such a large impact on this community that includes encouraging a former drug addict to make his life better will now be a judge.
