Walk to bring awareness to dementia

It first, it’s just some memory problems. But that’s the first sign of cognitive impairment.

And as time goes along, the memory loss gets worse. There are problems like wandering and getting lost, trouble handling money and paying bills and repeating questions. It takes longer to complete normal daily tasks.

Eventually, this condition leads to being unable to communicate and completely dependent on others for care.

This condition is called Alzheimer’s Disease. It’s the most common cause of dementia.

Most people have had some experience dealing with the disease. They may have a family member who suffers from it, or just know a neighbor or friend. The disease is a terrible way to suffer and it puts a tremendous burden on family members.

The frustrating part is that there isn’t much loved ones can do to provide comfort. At this time, there is no cure. According to the National Institute on Aging, Alzheimer’s Disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. But it says recent estimates indicate that the disorder may rank third, just behind heart disease and cancer, as a cause of death for older people. One in eight over the age of 65 are living with dementia.

Today, all of us who live in southwest Minnesota can help bring some awareness to this tragedy of life. The Marshall Area Dementia Awareness Network is holding a Walk for Memories from 4-7 p.m. Today at Independence Park.

Participating in this walk won’t guarantee cures for our loved ones. But a lot of information will be provided during the event, which will help us understand what our loved ones are going through. And getting that information is worth the walk.
