Short Takes

Saddle up for a good time

THUMBS UP:

It’s good to see such events as the Saddle Horse Holiday that was held in Lake Benton last weekend continue to thrive. These type of events showcase southwest Minnesota’s rural lifestyle. At 72 years old, the longevity of this event is amazing. There are so many activities nowadays that makes it challenging for people to slow down and enjoy a horse trail ride. Independent coverage of the Saddle Horse Holiday focused on a South Dakota family who have participated for 50 years. That is also amazing. The festival also featured something else that is unique from other festivals in the area. The bed race was a lot of fun for participants and those who showed to watch.

Firefighters step up to save house

THUMBS UP:

Firefighters in Ghent did a fantastic job Monday in containing flames that ignited inside an attached garage from spreading too far into the house. Besides Ghent Fire and Rescue, also responding were the Lyon County Sheriff’s Department, North Memorial Ambulance Marshall, Minneota Fire Department and the Marshall Fire Department.

Legislature session disappointing

THUMBS DOWN:

Jennifer Byers, vice president of grassroots and chamber relations with the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce spoke to business people and other residents about the past Minnesota Legislature session. “Obviously, we were disappointed we couldn’t get a tax conformity bill,” she said. She said everybody expected passage of such a bill. She is right. While there were some bright spots, the session was somewhat disappointing for southwest Minnesota residents.

Military veterans deserve recognition

THUMBS UP:

Congratulations and appreciation goes out to the organizers of the Balaton veteran motorcycle run. It was a good opportunity for motorcycle enthusiasts to get on the road with friends and then enjoy dinner and entertainment. But most importantly, it was a good opportunity to recognize military veterans in our area. Also, members of the American Legion color unit deserves a pat on the back for standing at attention with the U.S. Flag as the motorcyclists entered the Balaton football field after the two runs. More events like this are needed.
