Congressman Peterson checks in

THUMBS SIDEWAYS:

Good to see Congressman Collin Peterson took the time to visit Marshall Tuesday during Congress’ spring recess. Peterson paid a visit to the Brau Brothers Brewery to meet with area agriculture-related business owners. Peterson, a Democrat, was critical of President Donald Trump’s tariff order. “We’ve been preaching to him not to mess up what’s working,” Peterson said. “Don’t try to fix something that no longer exists.” He predicted the tariffs will affect the pork industry. That would be bad news for hog farmers in southwest Minnesota.

A day of action gets our attention

THUMBS UP:

The “We believe — a day of action against domestic violence” event at Southwest Minnesota State University Wednesday was a good reminder of a major issue women face today. Organizers say domestic violence claimed the lives of at least two dozen Minnesota women last year. Rally speakers lectured that the first step toward helping to stop domestic violence is to believe survivors.

Students making a worldwide impact

THUMBS UP:

Southwest Minnesota State University students are making a worldwide impact. Clear examples are students Brennan Pruszinske and Beka Danielson. They are members of an international organization called Enactus. It connects student, academic and business leaders through entrepreneurial-based projects that empower people to transform opportunities into real, sustainable progress for themselves and their communities. The two SMSU students returned from a visit to Haiti and worked on a water purification program.
