Lyon County gets it right on veteran memorials
Lyon County on Tuesday reinforced its support in recognizing our military veterans. The board of Commissioners approved $15,000 in county funding to help with the construction of a veterans memorial in downtown Marshall.
Bruce Knieff and Marshall Fire Chief Marc Klaith presented concept sketches of the memorial wall which would be built at Memorial Park. Knieff described the memorial as a “major project with an estimated cost of $225,000 to $250,000.” Klaith said supporters have raised $90,000 so far.
The decision to contribute $15,000 to the Marshall project follows an earlier decision to donate $15,000 in funding for a memorial in Minneota.
It took several months for the board to make a decision on the Minneota memorial. However, when commissioners finally made the decision to help with the Minneota project, they wisely made sure funding would be available for another major project in the county. The board anticipated a request would be coming from Marshall.
Commissioners made the right decision to make sure the same amount of funding would be available for both projects.
