Seniors ‘heart and soul’ for Tigers

THUMBS UP:

Sports reporter Brennen Rupp reported in Wednesday’s Independent that the 2017 senior class for the Marshall Tiger basketball team went out in style during Tuesday’s Senior Game against Sioux Falls Roosevelt.

The seven players combined for 72 points in the 80-49 victory.

“They are the heart and soul of our team right now,” Marshall coach Travis Carroll said. “We’ve had a successful season up to this point. We look at at these seven guys and were very lucky to have each one of them.”

“The magnificent seven:” Mitch Sueker, Weston Baker Magrath, Zach Bloemker, Blaise Andries, Reece Winkleman, Nicky Ektanitphong and Ryan VanMoer.

SMSU women looking to future

THUMBS SIDEWAYS:

Four women’s basketball players wrapped up their Southwest Minnesota State University careers Wednesday after the Mustangs lost to Minnesota State University Moorhead 71-35. Despite the tough loss, there are positives. SMSU will return its top five scorers and top rebounders for the 2017-18 season. Also, Lauren Hedlund scored 13 points against Moorhead and is just 17 points away from joining the 1,000 career points milestone.

Give us our broadband

THUMBS UP:

Lyon County commissioners on Wednesday voted to join five other area counties in a proposed broadband feasibility study. Lyon County Board chairman Paul Graupmann said the group of counties received a proposal for the study from Finley Engineering of Slayton.

Finley is proposing to study three different possibilities for expanding broadband Internet in the region. Finley said the study will compare costs for all three situations and look at ways to fund each.
