Short Takes for Jan. 6

Letter not appreciated

THUMBS DOWN:

The newsroom received a letter Dec. 30 all the way from California from a Kyle Dickinson of Hemet. He was concerned that “Caucasian Americans” are being subjected to advertisements comprised of “white women or girls with some other race of men. This is to cause an appearance of friends or marriage….These are propaganda prepaired (sic) by bigots, working their prejudice to their satisfaction…These bigots have no regard for Caucasian’s (sic) rights.” The year 2016 was the year of the bigot. It’s disheartening to read a letter someone who is so filled with fear, hate and ignorance.

Cheers to diversity

THUMBS UP:

Congratulations to State Rep. Ilhan Omar for becoming the nation’s first Somali-American to be elected to a state Legislature — and it happened in Minnesota, something to be proud of.

Thank you to Jody Mohr

THUMBS UP:

Library patron Jody Mohr faithfully sends a “Books and Beyond” column every month, which introduces us to books we might never have heard of, enticing us with her descriptions and book excerpts.

Grateful for longer daylight hours

THUMBS UP:

We’re grateful for the extra minute or so of sunlight we are seeing every day.
