Charles Carrera

On Oct. 6, 2017, Charles M. Carrera went home to be with the Lord. Charles was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Otilio and Virginia (Del Mercado) Carrera. He grew up attending Lakeview Bible Chapel and accepted Christ as his personal savior.

Charlie graduated from Roosevelt University with a bachelor of music, served his country in the United States Army with a tour in Vietnam, and married Rita (Sanders) Carrera in River Forest, Illinois, on June 10, 1967. They were blessed with two beautiful children, Mike and Michelle.

Music played a very important role in Charlie’s life. He began his career as a public school music teacher at Tuley Middle School in Chicago. In 1980, he accepted a teaching position at Milroy Public School and he and his family moved to Minnesota. For 21 years, Charlie taught k-12 music, including band, choir, and general music. He loved teaching and dedicated his life to helping his students appreciate music. He was best known for his wonderful all-school music programs.

Charlie loved and served the Lord through music at the Evangelical Free Church in Marshall. He loved playing piano, directing the choir, and serving as a music leader for Awana. An active member of the church, he also taught Sunday school and served as an elder. Charlie was very involved in his community, serving as a fun and creative director for the Marshall Area Men’s Chorus from 1990 to 2001. After retiring from teaching, Charlie worked for Adult Basic Education, the Marshall Area Fine Arts Council, and the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council, which allowed him to continue the work of teaching and the arts that he loved so much.

Charlie was a wonderful husband and father. His grandchildren, Alex, Ben, and Davis, were the loves of his life. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Rita, son Mike and his wife Samantha, and daughter Michelle and her husband Jason.

He is survived by his sister Beanie Mould and her husband Roy, sister Martha Smith and her husband Dan; brother George and his wife Rosemary, brother Bill and his wife Lillian, brother Bob and his wife Karen; sister-in-law Beatrice; as well as many nieces, nephews, and brothers- and sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, brother Armando, sister Dora, nephew Ronnie Carrera, and niece Dawn Mould.

A Celebration of Life service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Marshall Evangelical Free Church with a meal to follow. An additional service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Northwest Bible Chapel in Chicago, Illinois.
