NORTH MANKATO — Services for Lyle Wichmann, 71, of North Mankato, at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Mankato. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Northview-North Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery, Balaton. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.
He died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, in North Mankato.
Lyle Lawrence Wichmann was born in Marshall Jan. 10, 1946, the third of five children to Lawrence A. Wichmann and Elenora Wichmann. Lyle graduated from Balaton High School in 1964. After graduation, he attended Mankato State University, earning his bachelor’s degree in 1968 and his master’s degree shortly afterward. Lyle worked for 35 years as the librarian at Monroe Elementary and other Mankato elementary schools. As an elementary school librarian, Lyle’s passion was encouraging students to read. His students loved him and many learned the importance of reading due to Lyle’s efforts.
Aside from work, Lyle enjoyed supporting the arts, traveling the world, volunteering at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, gardening, and couponing/recycling. He was a careful steward of his resources, which allowed him to support many important organizations through his philanthropic efforts.
Lyle is survived by brothers, Lynn (Kim) Wichmann of Balaton and Lowell (Peggy) Wichmann of Balaton; sister, Ruth Ann (Leon) Johnson of Okabena; 10 nephews and nieces; and many other loving family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Elenora; and his infant sister, LaVonne.
