Englebert “Bert” Puetz

MARSHALL — Services for Englebert “Bert” Puetz, 85, of Marshall, formerly of Mitchell, S.D., will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell, S.D. Burial will be in the American Legion Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday with a scripture and rosary service at 7 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church. Arrangements are with the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell, S.D.

He died Saturday, April 15, 2017.

Englebert John Puetz was born Aug. 18, 1931, in Ethan, S.D., to William and Mary (Grohs) Puetz. He attended school in Ethan, graduating from Ethan High School in 1950. During high school, Bert was active in Boys State, was All State in basketball, football and track, played American Legion baseball and was crowned Homecoming King. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War from February 1952 until honorably discharged as Corporal in February 1954. He then completed a two-year post military training. At a dance, he met Dolores Ann Hohn and on Sept. 14, 1954, they were married in Dimock, S.D. Bert was committed to construction and farming activities throughout his working career. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed cooking, canning, fishing, dancing and playing cards. Englebert was a loving and extremely dedicated husband, father, grandfather and played an active role in the caring of his entire family. He enjoyed spending time and helping family, friends and others throughout his entire life. He was a man of strong faith, mercy, compassion and left a lasting impression on all that knew or ever met him. No one will forget his contagious smile and infectious humor. Englebert was a long time member of Holy Family Catholic Church and lifetime member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Dolores; 13 children: Maynard (Lillian) Puetz of Mitchell, Alice (Lee) Johnson of Bloomfield, Neb., Marcia (Steven) Rennich of Harrisburg, S.D., Peggy (Dr. Henry) Donahue of Richmond, Va., Jon (Lori) Puetz, Clear Lake, S.D., Lisa (Robert) Norfolk of LeMars, Iowa, Juliana (Douglas) Janssen of DeSmet, S.D., Norma (Russell) Swadener of Omaha, Neb,, Boyd (Norene) Puetz of Massapequa Park, NY, Helen (Dwight) Kleinsasser of Papillion, Neb., Christopher (Dr. Lezlie) Puetz of Hinckley, Dr. Christine (Brian) Burg of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Dr. Paul (Jenna) Puetz of Marshall; 50 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; one sister, Devonia Oster, one brother, George Puetz both of Mitchell, S.D.; and a sister-in-law, Adeline Puetz of Brookings, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark Puetz; grandson, Jesse Puetz; great-grandchild, Sammie Easland; brothers: Harold, Clarence and Clyde; sisters: Genevieve Feterl, Barbara Bowar, Esther Claseman and Berneice Feiner; brothers-in-law: Herb Haupt, Lloyd Grayson, Ronald Feterl, Roland Bowar, Francis Feiner, Anthony Oster and Arnold Claseman; and sisters-in-law: Rose Puetz, Josephine Puetz and Mavis Puetz.
