She died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, at the Minneota Manor in Minneota.
Marcella (Sally) Traen was born July 18, 1923, to Henry and Margeritte (Kloos) Marquardt on a farm near St. Leo. Margeritte died shortly before Sally’s third birthday; she was raised by her great aunt and uncle, Mary and Henry Bach. At age 13, she lived with the William Lanners family. When asked where she lived as a child, she said, “Wherever I hung my hat.”
Sally was married to Anton (Tony) Traen on Oct. 3, 1942, and they shared 57 years of married life. They lived on the family farm near Taunton, where they raised their 10 children. They worked hard and saw the farm into its 100th year in the family. Sally was known for her delicious baked goods, and meals, baking 12 loaves of bread at a time, always having a fresh batch of her signature buns cooling on the counter as family members or friends arrived for a visit. Through gardening and raising chickens and livestock, Sally and Tony provided for the family by the fruits of their labors, while teaching their children their many skills.
Sally was also active in the St. Joan of Arc Society at St. Edward Catholic Church throughout the years, and served as an officer. She took part in Extension Club and Neighborhood Birthday Club, as well as Bridge Club. She was a great supporter of the Minneota Vikings wrestling and football teams. She loved to play cards with family and friends, as well as Rolle-bolle. She was skilled at crochet and made afghans for all her grandchildren.
Sally is survived by all 10 of her children, Ray (Carol) of Moneta, Va., Mary Roeller of Roseville, Rich (Nancy) of Hastings, Audrey (Mark) Hinton of St. Paul, Joan (Steve) Hinton of Willmar, John (Shelly) of Naperville, Ill., Tom (Vicky) of Benson, Jerry (Robin) of Minneota, Pat (Larry) Teigland of Minneota, Steve (Robin) of Minneota; 31 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Evon Marquardt of Marshall.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and four brothers, Arnold, Robert, Harold and Edward Marquardt.
She will be greatly missed by all her family.
