Tom Hanks’ debut book is due in October

NEW YORK (AP) — Tom Hanks is putting his love of vintage typewriters to good use — his collection of short stories will be published in October.

The Oscar-winning actor’s first book, “UNCOMMON TYPE: Some Stories,” features 17 stories, each in some way involving a different typewriter. It’s due out Oct. 24 from Alfred A. Knopf, the publisher said Tuesday.

Among the stories written by Hanks, who owns over 100 typewriters, is one about an immigrant arriving in New York City, another about a bowler who becomes a celebrity and another about an eccentric billionaire.

Hanks said in a statement that he began work on the stories in 2015: “I wrote in hotels during press tours. I wrote on vacation. I wrote on planes, at home, and in the office.”

Lisa Marie Presley to pay estranged husband’s legal fees

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge says Lisa Marie Presley won’t have to pay spousal support to her estranged husband while they fight over her assets, but she will have to pay some of his attorney’s fees.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patrick Cathcart on Wednesday ordered Presley to pay $50,000 to the lawyer representing her estranged husband, Michael Lockwood.

The order doesn’t affect the pair’s children, who are subject to a child welfare case and in the care of Presley’s mother.

Lockwood is challenging the validity of an agreement he signed after marrying Presley in 2006 that would govern how much he’s entitled to in a divorce. He had been seeking $40,000 a month in spousal support.

The judge said Lockwood will have to wait on support until a trial later this year.

Oprah Winfrey to speak at upstate NY college commencement

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Oprah Winfrey will be a speaker at the graduation ceremony for an upstate New York college that some graduates of her South African school attended.

The Skidmore College website says the author, actress and former talk show host will be a speaker at the May 20 commencement at Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

Winfrey will receive an honorary Doctorate of Letters in the Arts from the private liberal arts college located in Saratoga Springs, 165 miles north of New York City.

The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy, a boarding school for underprivileged South African girls, opened outside Johannesburg in 2007. Several graduates of the school have attended Skidmore.

Video shows Harrison Ford’s mistaken flyover at airport

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Newly released video shows a plane piloted by Harrison Ford suddenly and mistakenly flying low over an airliner with 110 people aboard at a Southern California airport.

The 45 seconds of soundless video show the “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones” star’s potentially serious mishap last week at John Wayne Airport in Orange County.

Ford, 74, was told to land his single-engine plane on a runway, but he instead landed on a parallel taxiway.

The video released Tuesday shows the American Airlines 737 taxiing slowly. Then Ford’s yellow Aviat Husky suddenly zooms in from the right of the frame, flying low over the airliner and casting its shadow down the middle of the bigger plane before landing on the taxiway.

“Was that airliner meant to be underneath me?” Ford was heard on air traffic control recordings asking, according to NBC.

The video then shows the same landing from the back, giving more time to the approach of Ford’s plane, but the flyover itself is barely visible.
