Shopko to close more stores — but not Marshall

MARSHALL — After filing for bankruptcy in January, the number of Shopko stores planned to close down is now at 250.

Shopko released an updated list this week of stores that will be shutting down. But while the list includes stores in Worthington, St. Peter, Hutchinson and St. Cloud, the Marshall location will remain open.

Last month, the Wisconsin-based Shopko Stores announced it was going through Chapter 11 reorganization, saying debt and ongoing competitive pressure were forcing the company to seek protection from creditors. Shopko was reporting assets of less than $1 billion and liabilities of between $1 billion and $10 billion.

In December, the Marshall Shopko location announced it was one of 22 stores closing down their pharmacies. However, it looks like the store itself will remain open. According to a list of Shopko’s go-forward store locations, stores in Marshall, Fairmont, Luverne, Pipestone and Windom will stay open. The go-forward list includes a total of 120 stores and four freestanding optical locations. Of the Shopko stores staying open, 21 are in Minnesota.
