Materials on stovetop played part in Marshall house fire

MARSHALL — The presence of combustible materials on a stovetop played a part in a house fire Sunday night, Marshall Fire Chief Quentin Brunsvold said.

A state fire marshal was at the scene of the fire on Tuesday, Brunsvold said. The fire, reported around 8 p.m. Sunday, began in the kitchen area of a house on the 300 block of East Main Street. Brunsvold said the cause of the fire has been classified as “radiated or conducted heat from operating equipment, due to improper placement of combustible materials on the stovetop.”

Objects or materials that can burn should never be placed or left on a stovetop, Brunsvold said.

For safety, “Always act as if your stovetop is on,” he said.

Damage caused by the fire was mostly contained in the kitchen area, although there was some smoke and additional damage in other parts of the house, Brunsvold said. He said the damage was repairable.

The occupants of the house, which is a rental property, weren’t at home at the time of the fire. While there weren’t any human injuries, the Marshall Fire Department reported two pets died.

On Monday, the southwest Minnesota chapter of the American Red Cross said it had been contacted on behalf of the residents.
