MPS seeks input on facilities

Inviting public to attend meetings Wednesday or Nov. 7

MARSHALL — Residents in the Marshall Public School District are invited to attend one or both of the upcoming Community Input Meetings regarding long-range facilities planning.

The first meeting is slated for 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday in the Marshall High School Media Center, while the second is the same time and place on Nov. 7.

“Involving our community — our students, families, staff, business owners and residents — in the creation of a long-range facilities plan is certainly a priority, as we value that input and those ideas,” MPS Superintendent Scott Monson said. “While the school board and/or administration may have various ideas for a long-range facilities plan, it will be important to ensure that those ideas are aligned with those of our community.”

The goal of the process is to develop a long-range facilities plan that addresses the district’s needs — including the age of the West Side building, creating an improved 21st century teaching and learning environment, safety and security at all sites, additional programming options, additional classroom space and more classroom and office space for support programs — that will be supported by the community.

“Various discussions will take place during the Community Input Sessions, including discussions about perceptions regarding the school district to specific aspects of the future of our facilities,” Monson said. “Attendees will also have opportunities to share their or the community’s perceptions, ideas and concerns as well as asking questions that they might have.”

MPS staff is also invited to attend and share in the discussions. Administrators and school board members will be in attendance as well to answer questions, listen to information shared by others and participate in the discussions.

A special school board work session was also added, beginning at 4 p.m. on Nov. 7, so the school board can also share their thoughts, ideas and input. Monson said Pat Overom from ICS Consulting will facilitate the meeting.

“Input from these two (community) meetings, along with input from other information gathering activities will assist the district in developing and sharing a long-range facilities plan,” Monson said. “We hope that the Community Input Sessions can be a step toward addressing –existing and future — facility needs with a plan based on what the community envisions for the future of our students, school district and community.”

Monson said he’s looking forward to getting constructive feedback regarding the district’s future.

“We encourage anyone from our school district to attend one or both of the Community Input Sessions and we hope we have a great turnout for both of them,” he said.
