MMU workers find old car parts under street

MARSHALL — A Marshall Municipal Utilities crew found more than just underground cables beneath Peterson Street on Friday. They ended up unearthing an old car — or at least, what was left of one. Among the pieces they discovered were parts of a seat, and even a driveshaft with an axle and wheels still attached.

“It was probably some old car parts or something, that someone had buried back there years and years ago,” said MMU electrical superintendent Larry Lamote.

The crew was boring underneath Peterson Street, which runs between Sunrise Lane and Jewett Street, behind Lockwood Motors.

“We’re doing a cable replacement,” for electric lines running under the street, Lamote said. But the work didn’t go as planned.

“They started finding car parts,” he said. The scraps of metal were dug up and brought to the surface. Removing the car parts held up the cable replacement project a bit, Lamote said, but it didn’t stop the work. The parts will probably be taken away to a salvage yard, he said.

Lockwood Motors posted a photo of the unearthed car parts on the business’ Facebook page Friday afternoon. The post prompted a lot of reactions from area residents — including some jokes about “Push, Pull or Drag” sales.

Lamote said this isn’t the first time that MMU has found buried scrap in Marshall. He estimated around 20 to 30 years ago, “We ran across some (buried) car parts near the fire hall.”

“They said there used to be an old salvage yard back there,” so that could account for the buried parts, Lamote said.
