Dayton’s visit part of tour to push for school funding

MARSHALL — Gov. Mark Dayton will be in Marshall today as part of a push for emergency aid for school districts across Minnesota. Dayton will visit Park Side Elementary school this afternoon, where he will meet with students, teachers and administrators from Marshall Public Schools.

Dayton has been touring schools across the state as he advocates for a proposed $137.9 million in one-time emergency aid funding for school districts.

At least 33 school districts in Greater Minnesota and 26 school districts in the Twin Cities metro area are facing immediate budget deficits, Gov. Dayton’s office said Wednesday. Those budget deficits could result in teacher and support staff layoffs, and cuts to school programs, in the coming year, the governor’s office said.

Marshall Public Schools is facing a nearly $350,000 budget deficit for the 2018-2019 school year, according to the governor’s office.

The proposed emergency school aid would increase school funding by 2 percent, the governor’s office said. That would result in $124.1 million in one-time aid to school districts in the 2019 fiscal year, and $13.8 million in the 2020 fiscal year. The new funding would amount to an additional $126 of funding for every student in Minnesota.

According to figures from the governor’s office, the proposed funding would include $409,716 in one-time aid for Marshall Public Schools.
