MILROY — A standoff between a man inside a shed and law enforcement ended at 5:24 p.m. Wednesday. Independent reporter Deb Gau reported law enforcement officials using a K-9 unit took the suspect into custody and put him inside a police vehicle.

Law enforcement officials fired smoke into a shed during the standoff. Gau said the man did open the door for a second, but closed it again before he came out for good. Law enforcement, including the Redwood County Sheriff’s Department and the Minnesota State Patrol, surrounded the shed in Milroy for more than two hours Wednesday afternoon. Law enforcement said a person with an outstanding warrant fled into the building. Officers spoke with the person over a public address system, asking them to step outside. As of 3:24 p.m., the person had not yet been taken into custody. Responders at the scene included an emergency response unit and a K-9 unit.

Heidi Sachariason, principal and director of Milroy Area Schools, said the campus was on lockdown during the standoff.

“The Redwood County Sheriff advised us to have our exterior doors locked, so we did that,” Sachariason said. “But we were able to carry on as usual and the kids were dismissed (without incident) at 2 p.m. They advised us that it was OK to do that.”
