Marshall speech team competes in two tournaments
MARSHALL — Members of the Marshall Tiger Speech Team had a good showing at two different tournaments on Saturday. The team divided into two, and had members competing at both Eastview High School in Apple Valley, and Redwood Valley High School in Redwood Falls.
The Eastview tournament was one of the largest tournaments of MHS’ season so far, with more than 1200 competitors split into varsity and junior varsity divisions, said Marshall Speech head coach Rick Purrington. A total of 10 Marshall students won individual awards at the Eastview tournament. Senior captains Mariana Oaxaca and Alexa Amundson, as a result of their season success so far, have both qualified for the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions in Denver in May, Purrington said.
Marshall students also had a good showing at the Redwood Valley Tournament, with a total of five students winning individual awards in their speaking categories.
Next week, the team will reunite to compete in Chaska, Purrington said.
