3 crashes, 5 injured in Hwy. 14 crashes
GARVIN — Slippery conditions helped lead to multiple crashes in the same spot on U.S. Highway 14 late Friday night. A total of five people were injured, and a Lyon County Sheriff’s Department squad car was damaged, the Minnesota State Patrol said.
Another man was injured in an unrelated crash Saturday in Murray County.
On Friday night, the conditions on Highway 14 were snowy or icy at the time of the crashes, the State Patrol reported.
The crashes started with a vehicle in the ditch just east of the intersection of Highway 14 and U.S. Highway 59.
At 10:07 p.m., a 2017 Dodge pickup driven by Lance Rice, 53, of Russiaville, Indiana, was parked on the shoulder of Highway 14, while Rice was outside trying to help the other vehicle out of the ditch. An eastbound 2000 Toyota driven by Nor Por Xiong, 57, of Walnut Grove, lost control and rear-ended the pickup, the State Patrol said.
Nor Por Xiong and a passenger in the Toyota, 67-year-old Nhiachoa Xiong, of Walnut Grove, were taken to the Tracy hospital with non life-threatening injuries, the State Patrol said. A passenger in the pickup, 85-year-old Marvin Dale Hornstein, of Kokomo, Indiana, was also taken to the Tracy hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
A second collision, reported at 10:25 p.m., happened while the Lyon County Sheriff’s Department was responding at the scene. A Lyon County squad car was parked on the westbound shoulder of Highway 14 with its emergency lights flashing, when it was struck by a westbound 2017 Dodge Stratus driven by Chelsey Starr Wynn, 18, of Tracy.
Wynn slowed down while approaching the scene, and then lost control of the Stratus, the State Patrol said. The Stratus hit the rear of the squad car and went into the ditch, the State Patrol said.
The squad car was unoccupied at the time of the crash, but two passengers in the Stratus received injuries in the crash, the State Patrol said. Noah Eugene Fastenau, 19, of Tracy, and Taylor Collins Thomas, 21, of Tracy, were both taken to the Tracy hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Neither were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, the State Patrol reported.
Tracy Police also responded at the scene.
A Slayton man was injured in the Saturday crash involving a tractor and trailer Saturday afternoon west of Hadley, the Minnesota State Patrol said. Dennis Lane Sigurdson, 83, of Slayton was later flown to a hospital in Sioux Falls.
The crash was reported at 12:13 p.m., at Minnesota Highway 30 and 80th Avenue in Murray County. A tractor and trailer driven by Brant Robert Etrheim, 25, and a 2006 Dodge Caravan driven by Sigurdson were both eastbound on Highway 30 at the time of the crash. The tractor was turning north on 80th Avenue with its signal on, when the Caravan tried to pass in the passing lane, and hit the middle of the trailer, the State Patrol said. The Caravan tipped over onto the driver’s side, the State Patrol said.
Sigurdson was taken to the Slayton hospital, and then flown to Sioux Falls, the State Patrol said.
The Murray County Ambulance, Hadley Fire Department and Lake Wilson Fire Department all responded to the crash.
