New stop signs on the agenda for Marshall City Council

MARSHALL — A proposal going before the Marshall City Council tonight would add a few new traffic signs in one Marshall neighborhood. The proposal would add three new stop signs, and replace a yield sign with a stop sign, in the “tree streets” area of town — the neighborhood bounded by Boxelder Street, North Whitney Street, East College Drive, and North Bruce Street. The street names in that area feature different types of trees.

One of the items on the council’s Sept. 26 agenda is a resolution for new traffic controls, that would be more consistent with signs already in the neighborhood. The city’s Public Improvement and Transportation Committee addressed the request on Sept. 13, and voted to recommend the new signs. The resolution calls for new stop signs at three intersections with North Hill Street: North Hill and Pine Streets, North Hill Street and Birch Avenue, and North Hill Street and Willow Avenue. Except for those three intersections, most of the east-west streets in the “tree street” neighborhood already have stop signs where they intersect with North Whitney, North Hill and North Bruce streets.

In addition, the resolution calls for an existing yield sign at the intersection of Poplar Avenue and North Whitney Street to be replaced with a stop sign.

If the new signs are approved by the city council, they would be funded from city street repair and maintenance funds.

Another resolution facing the city council today involves parking concerns on Hamden Street. The Public Improvement/Transportation Committee is recommending the council restrict parking on alternate sides of Hamden Street. Hamden Street, a short street running in between businesses and apartment complexes near the corner of Saratoga Street and West College Drive, currently has parking allowed on both sides of the street. According to the Marshall city street department, the parking, combined with the narrowness of the street, makes snow removal and street sweeping difficult.

Other items of new business on the council agenda today include:

• Resolutions approving preliminary taxes for 2018, and adopting a preliminary 2018 budget.

• A resolution supporting chloride reduction in wastewater discharged to the Redwood River.

• A resolution awarding the sale of General Obligation Series 2017B Bonds.

• League of Minnesota Cites Insurance Trust property/casualty and liability insurance for 2018.

• Renewal of two agreements between the Marshall Area Chamber of Commerce and the city; one for services at the MERIT Center, and one for services at the Schwan Regional Amateur Sports Center

• Consideration of approval to purchase an arch for the entryway of the Amateur Sports Complex.

• Consideration of a memorandum of understanding with Prairie Home Hospice and Community Care, for an emergency shelter for hospice patients and staff.
