Economic ideas on Murray County agenda

SLAYTON — The Murray County Board will be hearing five economic development ideas during its meeting today.

Economic Development Authority Director Amy Rucker said some ideas that resulted from a 2007 study are being kicked around.

“Some of the communities had used the information for grants,” Rucker said. “Looking at those recommendations again, the EDA brainstormed ways to implement them. The EDA asked me to bring some of those ideas to the county board and get their opinions before moving forward.”

Those ideas include the following:

• Assist with rental housing development by providing and/or helping locate sources of gap funding

• Assist with affordable sub-division/lot development and home construction by proposing, developing and implementing a county-wide tax abatement program for new housing construction

• Provide matching funds to cities for housing demolition by using Federal Minnesota Investment Fund loan payments as matching funds for demolition

• Assist with marketing lots by developing a plan to market available residential lots throughout the county

• Consider a Health Reimbursement Arrangement Tax Levy: Consult with a public sector financial adviser to determine how much could be raised and what the legal process is. Levy funds could be used for demolition and redevelopment, rehabilitation loans, and to provide matching funds for city projects.

Rucker is looking forward to hearing what the commissioners have to say regarding these EDA recommendations.

Also on the agenda is the disposal of a surplus vehicle. County Coordinator Ronda Radke said that the End-O-Line Railroad Park was looking to sell a white Ford Ranger pickup.

The two ideas generated to accomplish this were to sell it on eBay or to take it to the Highway 59 Auction sale.

The Murray County Board will be asked its opinion on this topic as well.

Murray County Ag and Solid Waste Administrator Jon Bloemendaal will also appear before the Murray County Board with an update on the MACAI Conference.

Murray County Board meets at 8:30 a.m. today in the Commissioners Room at the government center in Slayton.
