Observing Memorial Day

Here’s where to go in the region on Monday

Area communities will be observing Memorial Day on Monday, May 29. Members of the public are invited to attend Memorial Day programs in the following communities on Monday:

Balaton — The Balaton Legion will be sponsoring a free breakfast for veterans at Benson’s By the Lake at 8 a.m. A Memorial Day program will be at 10 a.m. at the Ralco Technology Center. The keynote speaker will be retired Air Force Master Sgt. Duane Loeck. Following the program, there will be a ceremony at Lakeside Cemetery, with a gun salute and roll call of the dead.

Canby — A Memorial Day program will be at 10 a.m. in Central Park. In case of inclement weather, the program will be at Canby High School. A luncheon of turkey, gravy and biscuits will be served at Heroes from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Veterans and their spouses are invited to attend the luncheon for free.

Clarkfield — A Memorial Day program will be at 9 a.m. at Clarkfield Area Charter School.

Cottonwood — A Memorial Day program will be at 9:30 a.m. at the Cottonwood Community Center.

Currie — Both cemetery ceremonies and a Memorial Day program will be in the Currie area. Ceremonies will be at Willow Lake Cemetery at 9 a.m.; at the End-O-Line Memorial at 9:30 a.m.; at Pioneer Cemetery at 9:45 a.m.; and at IHM Cemetery at 10 a.m. A flower ceremony will be at the bridge at 10:30. The Memorial Day program will be at 11 a.m. at the Currie Fire Hall. Following the program, lunch will be served by the Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion, for a donation.

Echo — A Memorial Day program will be at 10:30 a.m. at the Echo Community Center.

Garvin — A Memorial Day ceremony will be at Bethel Cemetery in Garvin at 10:30 a.m. The ceremony will include a gun salute and special guest speaker Rev. Edsel Miller. In case of inclement weather, the program will be moved to Lake Sarah Lutheran Church. Following the ceremony, lunch will be served at the auxiliary hall in Garvin.

Ghent — A Memorial Day ceremony will be at 9 a.m. at St. Eloi Catholic church. The ceremony will include a roll call of the dead. Following the ceremony at the church, ceremonies will continue at the St. Eloi Cemetery, with a gun salute, flag ceremony and a reading by Pat Byrne. Following the ceremonies, lunch will be served at the town hall.

Granite Falls — A Memorial Day program will be at 11 a.m. at Veterans Park.

Hanley Falls — A Memorial Day program will be at 9:15 a.m. at Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church in Hanley Falls. Following the program, ceremonies will be at the church cemetery.

Hendricks– A Memorial Day program will be at 10:30 a.m. at Hendricks Public School.

Ivanhoe — A Memorial Day program will be at 9 a.m. at Lincoln Elementary School. Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Heidi Fier will be the keynote speaker. Following the program, ceremonies will be at the Ivanhoe, Wilno and Arco cemeteries.

Lake Benton — A Memorial Day program will be at 9:30 a.m. at the Lake Benton Opera House.

Lucan — A Memorial Day program will be at 7 p.m. at the Lucan Community Center. Jeff Gay will be the keynote speaker.

Marshall — Both cemetery ceremonies and a Memorial Day program will be in the Marshall area. Memorial Day ceremonies will be at Lynd Cemetery at 8 a.m.; Green Valley Cemetery at 8:45 a.m.; Marshall Cemetery at 9:15 a.m.; and Calvary Cemetery at 10 a.m.

The Memorial Day program will be at 11 a.m. at the Liberty Park band shell in Marshall, with keynote speaker Gary Lee Davenport. Following the program, lunch will be served at the American Legion, for a recommended $5 donation.

Milroy — A Memorial Day program will be at 10 a.m. at Milroy School.

Minneota — A Memorial Day program will be at 7:30 p.m. at the American Legion Building, and will continue in Veterans Park with the reading of Light a Light For Our Veterans, and the presentation of new veterans’ pavers. The event should conclude at about 9:30 p.m.

Porter — A Memorial Day program will be at 6:30 p.m. at Porter Hall. Dan Dybsetter will be the keynote speaker.

Redwood Falls — A Memorial Day program will be at 6:30 p.m. at the National Guard Armory in Redwood Falls.

Russell — A Memorial Day program will be at 10:30 a.m. at the Russell Town Hall. Following the program, a cemetery ceremony will be held with a roll call of the dead, gun salute, and special readings. Following the ceremonies, a potluck will be held at the town hall.

Ruthton — A Memorial Day program will be at 11 a.m. at the Ruthton Community Center.

Slayton — Both cemetery ceremonies and a Memorial Day program will be in the Slayton area. Memorial Day ceremonies will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery at 9 a.m.; at Hadley (Highland Home) Cemetery at 9:30 a.m.; at St. Ann’s Cemetery at 10 a.m.; and at Slayton North Cemetery at 10:20 a.m. The program will be at 10:45 a.m. at the Murray County Central school gym. Daryl Thul will give the Memorial Day address.

St. Leo — A Memorial Day program will be at 9:30 a.m. at St. Leo Catholic Church.

Taunton — A Memorial Day program will be at 9 a.m. at the Taunton Community Center with speakers Marc Klaith and Boys State participant Matt Lipinski, and music performed by The Swedes. Following the program, a ceremony will be held at Taunton Cemetery. A community brunch will be at the community center following the ceremonies.

Tracy — A Memorial Day program and gun salute will be at 9 a.m. at the Caboose. The keynote speaker will be Terry Wing.

Tyler — A Memorial Day program will be at 10 a.m. at the Tyler Legion Hall. The keynote speaker will be Army National Guard Spc. Darren Coens. The Friends of the Legion will provide refreshments in the Post Hall following the service.

Vesta — A Memorial Day program will be at 7 p.m. at the Vesta Community Hall.

Wabasso — A Memorial Day program will be at 10 a.m. at the Wabasso Community Center. A potluck lunch will follow the program.

Walnut Grove — A Memorial Day program will be at 9:30 a.m. at Westbrook-Walnut Grove Elementary School.

Westbrook — A Memorial Day program will be at 10:30 a.m. at Westbrook-Walnut Grove High School.

Wood Lake — A Memorial Day program will be at 10:30 a.m. at the Wood Lake Community Center. A potluck dinner will be served following the program.
