HRS to have Relay for Life color run/walk Sunday

MARSHALL — Staff and students at Holy Redeemer School have found a colorful way to raise money for its Relay for Life team.

The school’s Relay for Life team is sponsoring a color run/walk at 4 p.m. Sunday at HRS. Registration begins at 3:30 p.m.

HRS music teacher Anna Lenz said the school’s involvement with Relay for Life started a few years ago.

“We’ve had a school Relay for Life team for about the last four years,” Lenz said. Lenz is the captain of the school’s team, and said as a school, HRS has been impacted by cancer in the last few years. “I really just felt the call to help with that, and Relay for Life seemed like a good avenue to help.”

HRS did a color run last year as a way to help.

“Mrs. (Deb) Westby (physical education teacher) had the idea last year to do a color run for a fundraiser for our Relay team,” Lenz said.

So far, 96 people are registered for this year’s color run. Last year, people also showed up the day of the run to register. Lenz said it is not a timed event; participants can do one lap or as many as they want. The color run takes place in the schoolyard.

This past week, the school has been doing an event called Kids vs. Cancer, which is meant to raise funds and awareness about cancer. One of the awareness pieces was a checklist, with each day having a fact and an activity, such as Wear a Hat Day or Wear Purple Day. Some of the facts on the checklist include “Did you know family history of cancer is an important step in preventing cancer?” and “Did you know that you are supposed to eat two-and-a-half cups of fruits and vegetables each day?”

Lenz said the students have been taking part in the activities this week.

“I’ve seen a lot of red today, so I know they’re participating,” Lenz said on Tuesday. Tuesday was Wear Red Day at HRS.

On Thursday, the school did a tape challenge where art teacher Ashley Honetschalger was taped to the wall during lunch recess. Students donated $1 to participate in the challenge.

Lenz said Cold Stone Creamery ice cream will be available at the color run on Sunday, and Relay for Life luminaries will also be available for purchase.
