Teig returns to family business 19 years after leaving for college

Photo by Thoreson’s Photography Shawn and LeeAnn Teig returned to Marshall after living in South Dakota to be near their parents and so that Shawn could join the family business, Teig’s Lawn Care & Landscaping, LLC. They are pictured with their 10-year-olds, Jacob and Leah.

Editor’s Note: This story is the latest in a series that reflect the contributions made by Marshall High School graduates when they returned to the community.

MARSHALL — Shawn Teig of Marshall returned to Marshall to raise his family near his parents and to eventually take over Teig Lawn Care & Landscaping, LLC.

Teig graduated from Marshall High School in 1994. He was born and raised in Marshall until he went to college.

He and his wife, LeeAnn, both attended South Dakota State University (SDSU) in Brookings, South Dakota.

Teig studied ag education but went to work full time before completing the degree.

He lived in Brookings and worked at Larson Manufacturing as a factory worker and then Larson’s Storm Door and Millborn Seeds Inc as a sales person. He also started a branch of Teig’s Lawn Care & Landscaping, LLC out there in 1998 and ran it until 2013 when he moved back to Marshall and sold the Brookings business to a friend.

Returning to Marshall after 19 years, Teig currently works for Teig’s Lawn Care & Landscaping, LLC, as well as a part-time delivery person for Ecowater Systems.

Shawn and LeeAnn were married in October 2003 in Brookings. LeeAnn is originally from Tyler.

Teig said that having kids and wanting to raise them near their grandparents is why he moved his family back to Marshall.

His family includes his parents, Roger and Sherri; as well as his wife, LeeAnn, and their children, Jacob and Leah, who are 10 and in the fourth grade. LeeAnn is employed at Southwest Minnesota State University.

Shawn’s father is still the owner of Teig’s Lawn Care & Landscaping, LLC, but Shawn will be taking over the family business as his father starts approaching retirement, LeeAnn said.

Shawn said he was most meticulous about mowing in straight lines, but added that landscape design was his forte.

“I strive to get everything done just right,” he said.

Working for Teig’s Lawn Care & Landscaping, LLC, Teig has learned the skills to operate such equipment as the New Holland compact tractors, a Bobcat skid loader, Polaris and Honda 4-wheelers and Land Pride seeders. He also runs the 60-inch cut Toro lawnmower.

Shawn added that he started working for Teig’s Lawn Care & Landscaping, LLC in 1981 when he was just 5 years old.

“By maintaining other people’s landscaping, I’ve learned how to give customers an attractive, low maintenance landscape,” Teig said.

What’s it mean for Teig to live and work in his home town?

“It goes back to grandparents — being around my parents,” he said. “Besides, Marshall is ‘home.'”

Teig also said he is a fan of SMSU and MHS sports.
