What’s behind the green door? Nothing anymore

Submitted photo Marshall resident Jim Swartz took some photographs peeking inside the “What’s Behind the Green Door?” house in Marshall on Thursday, before the vacant building was demolished.

MARSHALL — The vacant, dilapidated house stood by the corner of North Hill Street and East College Drive for years. Lots of people likely recognized it for its brightly-colored front door, and the sign above it asking, “What’s behind the green door?”

But the old house is no more. A work crew tore it down, along with some nearby trees, on Thursday morning. The demolition will free the city to widen part of North Hill Street, if the lot the house stood on is ever redeveloped.

Marshall City Administrator Nicholas Johnson said the city has purchased a narrow strip of land along North Hill Street, which will be part of the right-of-way if the adjacent property is developed in the future.

“That’s a pretty narrow street there,” Johnson said — not only is it not as wide as a normal Marshall street, it’s also narrower than other parts of North Hill Street, further from the intersection with College Drive.

Because of its location close to the right of way, the vacant house needed to be demolished.

“It’s a city cost,” Johnson said, but tearing down the house would be “a win-win all around.”
