MARSHALL — A new retail store has opened up on 3rd Street in Marshall. It’s called Ebenezer Clothing Store.

Owner Sara Mares said the name Ebenezer is from a biblical verse which says, “Till now has the Lord helped us.”

The store, which opened July 7, has “clothes for the whole family,” she said. There are clothes for infants, dresses, skirts and blouses for women, jeans and shirts for men. She has boots for men on order. An assortment of flip-flops line a shelf. At the counter are shelves of perfumes for men and women as well as other items such as lotions and wallets. On the counter are stacks of catalogs that people can order from.

Mares, who co-owns the store with her husband, Saul Mares, said she opened the store because she wanted to work for herself. She opened a cleaning business last year but said there were already established cleaning businesses and she couldn’t get a foothold. She is hoping her clothing store with quality clothes at reasonable prices will be successful.

“I have many styles,” she said. “I hope to satisfy people and they can save more money.”

She plans to “start slowly and see what people want.” Mares is open to suggestions of what customers would like to buy, just don’t ask her to carry jeans for women.

“I always wear a long dress or skirt,” she said.

Mares also has bottled water for sale stored in a nearby refrigerator — because she likes to drink water.

“People would come here and ask for water and I would say yes, but then all the water would be gone,” she said. “I asked friends what should I do? And they said sell it for $1. Now no one buys it, which is fine because then I have water.”

When she’s not selling clothes and other items, she is repairing cellphones.

“I can repair glass and the digitizer,” she said.

Ebenezer is open seven days a week.
