Ag Bowl is Sept. 8 at SMSU

The 12th annual Ag Bowl–presented by Ralco –is set for Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Schwan Regional Event Center and the R/A parking lot on the campus of Southwest Minnesota State University.

Ag Bowl is a celebration of agriculture in Minnesota and features numerous events for both kids and adults. The sponsors of this year’s Ag Bowl include Ralco, Titan Machinery, ADM, Channel Seed, HyVee, CHS, Minnesota Corn & Soybean Growers Association, Pepsi, Golden Harvest, Doll Distributing, Marshall Animal Clinic, Lockwood Motors, Lyon County Corn & Soybean Growers and their check-offs, Midwest Ag Enterprises and Action Sports.

Starting at 3:30 p.m., activities for all ages begin, including a petting zoo, tractor displays, hay rides, face painting, bull riding and inflatable games. New this year for activities include Farm Bingo, hay maze, farm-themed kids crafts and a free football clinic hosted by SMSU football coaches and staff. The popular kids pedal pull will once again take place with registration starting at 4 p.m. for kids ages 4-11. The football clinic will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Hy-Vee Food Zone is back serving great food and beverages starting at 3:30 p.m. until 6 p.m.

The day is capped by the SMSU football game versus Wayne State starting at 6 p.m.

Proceeds generated by the Ag Bowl will fund scholarships and programming for worthy student-athletes and young people who will dedicate their careers to business success in agriculture, environmental science and the food industries.

SMSU’s educational programs in agriculture, environmental science and food arts and sciences develop young people who spend their careers working to grow the economic success of the agricultural industry. In acknowledgement of these efforts, the University has been the recipient of three NCAA Civic Engagement Awards for Ag Bowl.

Numerous Constitution Day events Sept. 17-21

The Center for Civic and Community Engagement at Southwest Minnesota State University will host Constitution Day programs throughout the week of Sept. 17-21.

Constitution Day commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution by 39 men on Sept. 17, 1787, recognizing all who are born in the U.S., or by naturalization, have become citizens.

Events include:

• Lunch to Learn: “The Constitution in Contemporary Times,” by Political Science Professor Dr. Douglas Simon, will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, in BA 161. Light refreshments will be served.

• An SMSU Black Box Production: Constitution Day Revue, will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, in the Black Box Theatre. The production will comprise songs and scenes celebrating the Constitution, citizenship, and American history.

• The Civic Engagement student staff and Student Association Senate will be tabling in the Student Center from Sept. 18-21, handing out pocket Constitutions, voting registration resources, and playing Constitution trivia.

• There will be a Constitution display in the McFarland Library from Sept. 17-21. Featured will be the Constitution in book form, and other library resources related to the Constitution.

For the entire week, The Center for Civic Engagement and Community Engagement office, located in BA 161, will have its own Constitution Day window display.

The events are sponsored by the SMSU Student Senate, SMSU Theatre and McFarland Library. All events are free and open to the public.
