Education Briefs for Dec. 21

Minneota High School sophomores participate in employer panel

Life-long learning, being a self-starter, accepting mistakes, mastering the art of communication, taking advantage of career exploration opportunities and keeping both your driving and criminal record clean were the themes shared by employers during the employer panel on Dec. 7 at Minneota High School.

In partnership with the SW MN Private Industry Council’s Youth and Young Adult Program, an employer panel was coordinated for the Minneota sophomores to assist them in exploring the various career options available in southwest Minnesota and to provide them with additional knowledge and resources towards a career pathway.

The following careers were represented on the panel: engineer, mechanic, interior design, education, law-enforcement, agriculture, and social work. Employers representing these careers included: MN Department of Transportation, Shelby Mae Interiors, Southwest Health and Human Services, Minnesota State Patrol, Southwest West Central Service Cooperative and Schuneman Equipment.

An employer panel is designed to increase students’ awareness about current and future training and employment opportunities through interactive career information. It also aids students in determining what steps or pathways exist to get to their goal.

Caron helps set  legislative platform for the MSBA

Marshall School Board member Dion Caron participated in the Minnesota School Boards Association’s Delegate Assembly Dec. 3.

The MSBA Delegate Assembly — comprised of 142 public school board members from across the state — debated and voted on legislative resolutions to help set MSBA’s legislative agenda for the 2017 legislative session.

“This process gives school districts an added voice through MSBA to lobby to our Legislature,” Caron said. “We have 16 resolutions that passed this year that will be lobbied for, in addition to some resolutions added last year, like the Ag Property Tax Credit, but that didn’t get past the governor’s desk.”

Among the noteworthy resolutions, the MSBA Delegate Assembly urged the Minnesota Legislature to:

• Provide permanent and full funding for the Telecommunications/Internet Access Equity Aid Program.

• Stabilize education funding by reducing the education cross-subsidy by 25 percent.

• Create a new funding stream for Advanced Placement, College in the Schools and other college credit programs for high school students.

• Support Comprehensive Mental Health Services which includes staff training, student supports and collaboration between communities and schools.

• Consolidate all teacher licensure activities into one state entity.

• Support policies that will help attract and retain teachers.

“MSBA’s Delegate Assembly does important work on behalf of all Minnesota School Districts by helping pull together strong support — and ultimately advocacy — for a number of common focal points. The work done by the Assembly and Dion will be helpful as we share our concerns during the up,” said Marshall Superintendent Scott Monson.
