Prorok competes in marketing  challenge

Sydney Prorok of Marshall was among 12 University of Nebraska-Lincoln students who competed in the inaugural Yahoo Advertising Knock-Out Challenge Nov. 17-18 at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Prorok is a senior advertising and public relations major in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications.

The challenge involved identifying a target audience and developing a marketing plan to get more people to play Yahoo fantasy football. Teams presented their plans to a panel of faculty, Yahoo professionals and local business professionals.

Students competed against the clock, using knowledge of public relations, advertising campaigns and media buys to create their plans. Four teams competed, with some working late into the night.

Rieger chosen as  Minnesota West  representative for statewide award for Excellence in Teaching

The Minnesota State Board of Trustees will honor a faculty member with the Award for Excellence in Teaching. This honor acknowledges and rewards exceptional individual professional accomplishment and encourages ongoing excellence in teaching.

Minnesota West Community & Technical College has recently undergone an extensive process (using input from faculty and students from each campus) to identify candidates to serve as the Minnesota West nominee for the Award for Excellence in Teaching. Laine Rieger, child development Instructor on the Minnesota West, Granite Falls campus has been chosen to represent for the Statewide Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Rieger will now compete with about 40 other nominees from fellow Minnesota State institutions from across the state. Nominations were based on criteria such as: innovative classroom delivery and/or programming, cooperation and partnerships within and outside of the college, campus involvement/leadership, and community involvement/leadership.

“Laine is steadfast in her dedication to students and their success. Her teaching style is captivating, her demeanor nurturing, and her love for education, endless. We are very fortunate to have Laine as a member of our faculty,” said Rebecca Weber, dean of Canby and Granite Falls campuses.

Honorable mention to the other Minnesota West Community & Technical College instructors whom were also nominated for the award: Peter Girard, diesel technology faculty, Canby campus; Jerry Deuschle, electrician faculty, Jackson campus; Rita Miller, medical laboratory technician faculty, Pipestone campus/Luverne Center; Deb Munsterman, small business management faculty; and Eric Parrish, music/theater faculty, Worthington campus.

Area residents receive  scholarships from the U of M Morris

The following area residents who attend the University of Minnesota, Morris received scholarships for the 2016-17 academic year.

On Sept. 20, more than 130 students gathered to celebrate their scholarship awards and to share their “Attitude of Gratitude.”

Canby: Bailey Hintz is the recipient of the Otter Tail Power Company Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded based on academic merit to first-year students whose families are served by Otter Tail Power Company.

Cottonwood: Trent Merkins is the recipient of the Douglas and Marion Payne Rural Students Scholarship.

Granite Falls: Michelle Dinesen is the recipient of the Ernest Kemble Scholarship. Established in 2010 by Dr. Ernest and Cathryn Kemble, this scholarship is for students who are juniors or seniors.

Marshall: Courtney Kuehl is the recipient of the West Central School of Agriculture Class of 1956 Scholarship. The WCSA Class of 1956 Scholarship was established by Peter Torvik in appreciation for the education that he and fellow classmates received at the West Central School of Agriculture.

Minneota: Allison Bot is the recipient of the Annette Seppanen and Curt Nelson Scholarship. In gratitude for their formative experiences at UMM, the Annette Seppanen (’82) and Curt Nelson (’83) established this scholarship for academically high achieving incoming freshmen from rural Minnesota. Hannah Buysse is the recipient of the Academic Excellence Scholarship. Awarded to meritorious students, this scholarship is made possible through the generosity of faculty, staff, alumni and friends of Morris with gifts from the sale of license plates through the Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services Collegiate Plate program.

Minnesota West  announces fall semester 2016 dean’s list

Minnesota West Community & Technical College announces the fall semester 2016 dean’s list and to congratulate the following students for their outstanding academic achievement. Students must be enrolled in at least 12 graded credits and earn a minimum 3.5 grade point average to be eligible for dean’s list honors.
